by | Nov 18, 2014 | Pest Control

Raccoons may look like cute, cuddly little creatures, but in reality, they can be quite dangerous if you are not careful. They have been known to choose wiring, which can cause house fires and to raid garbage cans and anywhere else that they can get food and make a comfortable home. While it is best to call in Anne Arundel’s Best Animal Control to remove raccoons from your home, there are a few myths about the creatures that need to be dispelled.

Strictly Nocturnal

It is said that raccoons are strictly nocturnal and that if you see one in the daytime, they are apt to be rabid. While raccoons prefer to roam at night, they are in no way rabid just because you see one during the day. Many, especially females with babies will venture out during the day. They are looking for food. While most raccoons are not rabid, you still need to take care just in case the one you run across is. You need to call in Anne Arundel’s Best Animal Control if you see a raccoon to take care of the problem for you.

Hibernate in the Winter

While raccoons go through a period of decreased activity in the winter, they do not hibernate. So, if you see a raccoon in your garage in the wintertime it is not the end of the world.

All Carry Rabies

While it is possible for a raccoon to have rabies, not all of them carry them. The majority of them do not have rabies and just like any other animal, if they do contract the disease they will die from it.

Raccoons Eat Cats

Raccoons are fully capable of killing a cat, but they do not eat them. They also do not make it their mission in life to kill the cats in your family.

These are just a few of the myths about raccoons that need to be dispelled. However, if you find a raccoon in your back yard, garage, or attic, it is better to call in animal control to remove the raccoon for you, instead of trying to remove the animal on your own. Click Here for more info!
